*.domain will cover anything on that domain, https://1.thatdomain.com https://2.thatdomain.com and etc. you can validate an unlimited number of subdomains with it , making it very valuable. George

Frankly nothing beats the free SSL that is generated with OpenSSL open source program For normal use I need that suffice unless you are using for a shopping cart etc.
Correct, self-signed ones are for personal use...hope you don't like your clients bugged with "untrusted ssl certificate" message on ecommerce or such sites.
