Cheap Domain Name Registrars - What's the deal?

I've heard that some of these places with the really cheap domain registry fees, might actually take your domain. I'm wondering if there is any truth to this. Some of the Registrars offer $1 domains (.coms) but where is the catch. If this was not the case, then why wouldn't everyone use the cheap places, rather than names.com, etc.?

catch is 1 per customer and for new customers only (unique credit card number required)
another words they are paying (regular $7-$1=$6) for acquiring new customer leads, this is the catch
the lowest no limit new .com registration i could find and regularly use is $5.92 (which will increase next month thank you f@#$%% much Verisign)

Most of the companies offering such cheap domain registrations... do so simply to promote their hosting business by coupling the offers with their at times expensive hosting plans!
