Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has moved tanks to the Colombian border and mobilized fighter jets on Sunday. Chavez warns Colombia that continued action against the FARC terrorists will spark a war.

Colombia's military said on Saturday troops killed Raul Reyes, a leader of Marxist FARC rebels, during an attack on a jungle camp in Ecuador in a severe blow to Latin America's oldest guerrilla insurgency. The operation included air strikes and fighting with rebels across the frontier.

Venezuela is harboring Communists rebels on its terrority and Colombia is following the lead of Turkey in striking against the terrorists attacking its terroritory.

I just read this on CNN, this is a very interesting situation. We all know the US and Venezuela aren't the best of buddies right now, but the US still imports a lot of oil from Venezuela; not many countries can use Venezuela's so called "dirty" oil. I wonder what the US stance would be if war did break out, we all know Columbia would attack oil industry along side military industry. Wonder what the US response would be, to engage Venezuela or Columbia to protect our economic interests?

It is better they find a way for peace and use their land and oil for their people's happiness.

Colombian army is stronger than the Venezuelans and the Colombians have US advisors. Chavez supports both the FARC and the ELN which have bases on Venezuelan territory.

What is Chavez trying to do? Does he think that his oil money is infinite? He should be concentrating on his home affairs as his popularity is shrinking rather than engage in outside adventures.

I'm sure this is some attempt in some weird way to build support with his people, don't ask me how, but I'm sure the reason is there.

Fight a war and then use it to rally the country behind him? Wonder if he had considered the cost for doing this? The Bush administration can surely make use of this opportunity to take Venezuela and their oil into their sphere of control by supporting Colombia.

Chavez is trying to start a crisis. Food shortages have caused Chavez to start Cuba-style rationing and the internal situation is getting worse.

Chavez wants war as a way to distract people's attention from his failed economic policies, When oil is $100 a barrel and your country exports 3 million dollars a day of oil, there is no reason that there should be a shortage of food like eggs and chicken.

Food shortages is actually cause not by real shortage but adoptation of Soviet style communist economy, resulting in artifically cheap prices that cause producers to be unwilling to produce and hence shortage as a result. Wonder why is he doing that given that Soviet Union and the former Iron Curtain countries were good examples of such systems failing.

Because they don't teach economics in the military.

Well then they will have to repeat the same mistakes and learn from experiences from the Soviet Union, won't be a nice experience though, for most Venezuelans.

Military operation is no solution of any problem. As you know USA's Army is most modern and developed with latest technology. But if not winning war on terror in Iraq or Afghanistan. So Military operation is part of problems not a solution of the problems.

That's a very broad statement that "military operation is no solution of any problem". It's not that simple and most of the world doesn't work that way. To progress on your way of thinking, the police are uncessary because we can negociate with crimminals.

The US is winning and unlike the terrorists is trying to limit civilian casualties. Just because the success isn't reported by left learning journalists doesn't mean that it's not happening.

    War! It's fannntastic

    It works for the USA!

Bogart, what exactly is the USA winning? Do you think that the strategic decision to invade Iraq was the correct one?

As opposed to letting France, Russia, and Germany undue the sanctions in return for the bribes that Saddam paid their leaders.

You forget the the US only had an armistice with Iraq. The US chose not to let Hitler rise like what happened in Europe after WW1.

I beg to differ on this, letting France, Russia and Germany take advantage of the sanctions is still better than fighting the Iraq war which is far more expensive than what was lost from the sanctions.

Ecuador has also sent troops to it's border with Colombia and Chavez has threatened to launch air strikes against Colombia with their newly purchased Sukoi aircraft.

The Colombian airforce has a disadvantage against the Venzuelans. Colombia has 20 or so 1960s vintage Mirage M5s which are no match for the Sukoi air superiority fighter bomber.

The Colombians are planning on purchasing more used mirages from Israel but are sure to press the US for F16s.

The economic sanctions against Iraq were waning and the economic embargo against Iraq was failing 10 years after the start of the Gulf War. US really had no choice but to conclude the Gulf War.

However, the prolonged conflict has been costly due to the failure to adhere to the 'Powell Doctrine' of using overwhelming force. The US needed another 500,000 troops to properly disarm the Iraqis and intern the Iraqi army.

Venezuela air force is no use if USA decides to intervene, I think Colombia should be quite safe. Given the present behavior of Chavez, I would think USA may just want to give him a lesson or two. Given that Venezuela are so near USA, they are really counting for troubles.....
