Charging For Access - Bad or Good?

I have a client who owns a nail art gallery, the site gets over 4,000 uniques a day and makes less than $10 dollars a day (ppc ads) this person talked to me the other day and said that he is tired of creating unique content and beautiful nail designs and not make what they deserve.

He said that they are thinking of switching from free to daily or monthly paid access to allow the users to view the gallery.

Would this be a good or bad idea, do you think people would pay to view the image gallery online?

If your content is good, you might be able to charge for it, but expect a sharp decrease in traffic, as most people won't pay for it.

If the content is really rare then you should do it otherwise competition is too much now!

Why doesn't he just sell the nail designs to make more money instead of charging the poor visitors?

A tattoo artist doesn't charge people to see what tattoos he's done or can do, he charges for the work itself.

Thanks for the tip, the owner of the site does not have a nail salon and does not have the money to open one, but he makes awesome nail designs and the site is getting very very popular, he wants to be able to make money online only, that is why we are trying to come up with something to monetize the site.

He should charge if the content is unique.

People who are against memberships are simply low ball losers. Bandwidth, websites, and YOUR TIME cost money. To think you SHOULDN'T charge for it is bad business. If you are trying to make money online, you treat it like a business.

Just as your local donut shop doesn't give away free donuts because they cost money. So does your friends time, bandwidth, and efforts. It doesn't even have to be exclusive. He could simply market it better.

Cheapskates on some of these forums kill me. I wouldn't listen to them. They think, and recommend like a surfer.

The fact of the matter is, people underestimate laziness. People will pay if you have some goodies, and are going to save them time, and hassle of zango, pop ups, and the rest of that crap. Finding the right price point for that value is another thing.

    2 cents.

If the price is reasonable, I don't see why users would be complaining.
