Channel organization: Multiple channels?

I recently setup multiple sites running Adsense and I'm trying to figure out how to best configure Adsense channels. I read about multiple channels and I'm wondering how to best set this up? Maybe something like:

    position-top
    position-middle
    position-bottom
    ...
    size-leaderboard
    size-banner
    size-half-banner
    ...
    palette-seaside
    palette-shadow
    palette-ink
    etc.

And then tag each add unit with three or four channels: (site or url,) position, size, and palette?
I'm really new at this so I'm not sure at all if I understand it yet. Thoughts?

    You probably only need:

    position-top
    position-middle
    position-bottom

Then every week, try a different color size combination.

    You can use something like..

    sitename-position-size

    Example:-
    digitalpoint-top-468x60

& use one channel of each adunit..

That would be my instinct as well. But isn't that the old way? You'll have an explosion of channels as your number of sites increases and less reporting control. Example:

    9 channels:
    siteA-top-468x60
    siteA-middle-468x60
    siteA-bottom-468x60

    siteB-top-468x60
    siteB-middle-468x60
    siteB-bottom-468x60

    siteC-top-468x60
    siteC-middle-468x60
    siteC-bottom-468x60
    ...

    vs.

7 channels: siteA siteB siteC top middle bottom 468x60

Also, with multiple channels you have finer control over reporting options. For example, you could answer overall questions such as how to top ads compare to bottom ads across all sites? Again, I'm new to this, I'm just wondering if anyone has gone the multiple channel route or compared the two styles.
