Changing Wordpress permalink structure?

Hello, as an introduction, my name is Derek and I run a wordpress blog.

I currently have over 40,000 incoming links to specific post pages and category pages. I have noticed the way my URL structure is set up, it isn't search engine friendly.

I was wondering, is there any way to change the permalink structure of the wordpress blog, without losing all of the backlinks and creating thousands of 404 errors?

    Thanks in advance.

I sort of came across the same problem not so long ago, but my blog was still in very early stages so links werent that important at the time. Sitemaps will come in handy, as for the links im not too sure :\

you can setup redirects from each of the old page locations to the new locations.
