I've experienced this in the past, but found that the site found it's ranking again in a couple of weeks. As long as the quality of your content hasn't changed, you should be ok.

Yes, it do plays a major role, but you'll get back your ranking and indexed pages after things get back to normal.
Just don't change your theme and layout again and again, and you'll be fine.

If the new theme is less SEO then yes it will affect the Indexing. I think your site is not very popular and this is because of that.

Theme change can affect rankings if it has poor structure for title tags, h1 tags and meta data, but if its causing the decrease in no. of indexed pages then surely its regarding your robots.txt file...check it immediately...if you are using wordpress then check your privacy settings whether you have accidentally blocked search engines from reaching your content. Good luck:)

I have experienced it, yes its true changing your theme will certainly affect for some time, Even if you change something in single.php immediately i can see googlebot visit my page for a change, Yes that is true change of theme has some impact on the traffic from google.

I had similar situation in November. I changed structure of titles on my pages. My website traffic went down by 75%. I got my traffic back a month later.

IMO, changing theme can affect SEO if the structure of new theme is less SEO friendly than the original one.
