I have over 10,000 html pages with the same meta title tag.

Is there a program that will change the title of all them so that they all have a different title?

If have a script on the custom title then maybe you could use a "find and replace" which lots of programs have, Frontpage would find and replace searching the html for you.

The pages are static and I want them all to have a distinct title. 10,000 different titles.

Maybe based on the filename or just a random conglomeration of letters.

Wow - that'd be a nice change - from 10,000 useless page titles to 10,000 useless new page titles. What a waste of a powerful SEO element on the page. :D

At least google would be more likely to index them.

Do you have a better idea on how to deal with this problem?

The only problem I see is that you are filling the net with even more garbage... I sure hope you don't get them indexed...

You could outsource the renaming to someone through a freelancer website and they could give them proper keyword related names. Probably get it decently cheap from overseas people

Unfortunately, the best way is to do it manually and make each one relevent to the page, that way when google does index them they would be a lot more relevant and no doubt as a result higher ranked. The title tag is a powerful thing when it comes to indexing so its best to do it properly and reap the benefits - in your case its a massive job I realise, but not one that should be shirked.

They are perfectly useful pages. They are product lists, categories, and detail pages. Perfectly useful.

It is just that every one of them says "Product List" as the title page. I want to changes them to something more descriptive and also different for each page.

If you know some programming it should be possible to open the file, find the first H1 tag (provided there is one) and change the title to that text. Some regular expression magic should do the trick.

Tell me what OS your running and I'll tell you my price for the coding job ;)

Look into using sed and/or awk. These two are command line tools that can be used to find certain sequences of text in each HTML file (e.g. the text inside <h1> tags) and use this text to replace the text inside <title>'s.

    aplus.net?

They call me on the phone about once every week or two offering me hosting for $5.95 a month.

I tell them I have 17 domains on my reseller account for $13.50 but they still call back every month!

Use BBedit. Open one of the pages and find the title tags. For example:

<TITLE>My Old Title</TITLE> do a find and replace for all 10,000 pages in BBedit with <TITLE>My New Title</TITLE>

This of course assume that every page has the same title name. But you get the idea. It would be really easy to do a find and replace for all pages using BBedit even if the titles are different.

OS doesn't matter. First, find out if there's any particular pattern on the page that you can use for titles. If there's something, like <h1>, as many people have suggested, then you can look for someone who can do this job for you. I doubt it's something you can do yourself (well, as far as I can see from your comments, you don't know what your site's running on and that you have 10K pages that are not served from a DB of some kind).
