Is there ant downside / danger in changing the title and/or description of an existing and reasonable well ranked page? The page is anywhere from 6 months to 1 year old.

    Thanks,

It depends on the content of your webpage. If the content of your webpage is mostly related to the title and description you will be keeping for it, the rankings may increase. However, if the content is not much related to the webpage, the rankings may fall.

Also, the rankings on different search engines will be different as the algorithm of each search engine is different.

Just check it whether you are ranking higher in search engine for some keyword which is connecting to that post, if not then it is ok to make some changes in title and update in the content. But if you are ranking for some keyword then don't make changes in title and you can make changes in description but without disturbing the targeted keywords.

If your page already ranks well then make VERY minor adjustments to the <title>... Wait until the page has been reindexed 3-4 times before judging whether the results are positive or negative. It takes the search engines a few times to "absorb" the changes. If positive then great. If negative then you can always return it to its original value (I would suggest logging the change - old value & date changed) for rollback purposes.

Changing the <meta name="description"> element is NOT going to affect your ranking at Google. They ignore both <meta name="description"> and <meta name="keywords"> when ranking URLs for a particular keyword phrase. However, the <meta name="description"> IS important... not for ranking... but instead for click-thru-rates. If your <meta name="description"> is shown as a snippet in the SERPs, a well written one can improve click-thru-rates.

As long as you don't change the permalink, you won't be losing the page rank.

Changing contents can be positively effects or negatively effects. It depends. If you manage to rank well on certain keyword, try not to change this keyword. Changing this keyword will make your site drop in ranking as google can't find the keywords it get indexed for that position.

Based on my experience, I did change one of my blog post earlier. The bounce rate was as high as 90%. I guess the content is not what the visitors was looking for. So, I edited the content section that suits best for title and the important keyword. Now, I able to get 50-60% bounce rate with increasing traffic on this particular page. This is an example of positive side of editing your contents.

Just make sure don't mess with your main keywords.

I would not change a page like that. It is better not to risk. Maybe you can write more pages and optimize. If optimized properly in 2-3 months those pages will be fine too, like the others.
