Hello, recentlly i both a website and i am planning to change the design.

The current design is somethin just 2-3 table ( done in Dreamweaver ) and full of content. The site is very high in serps and is not converting good because of the design of the site.

So my question is if i design a better looking site but keep the old content and everything else ( just changing the design ) will this effect my google serps ?

Can someone with more expirence in SEO answer my question.

yes it will affect things. have done this a few times, its not usually too dramatic.

if you copy across everything the same, especially meta titles and descriptions, plus all the body content into a clean new CSS design and keep the same pagenames, it might even get better in the SERPs though.

Yeah liek SEOibiza said it does have an affect, for example you don't want to redo the website all in flash and have no content for Google to read. If you can have the same content still but redo the template design it self and have it css validated I dont think you should have big problem.

Changing the design of a website doesnt affect the SEO factor of a website, but the SEM of a website will do.

Of course, a well design website is more pleasing to stay, and visit again.

No it won't make much difference, go ahead and change the design. Be careful that the content and tags don't get change though.

Just be 100% certain not to change filenames, otherwise any previous links to the site will not resolve properly and your rankings WILL decrease.

This will not change the SEO on your site, it may boost it. Google does not like to read code, so it prefers a site built in CSS as apposed to in tables. Ensure all your URLs stay the same as if these change you could lose the backlinks which has already brough the site success. Ensure all teh content and metadata stays in teh new design

In any redesign, you need to evaluate the existing SEOed elements on the page. So if you keep the <title>, Meta Desc, H1 (if used), you will keep the basic On-Page SEO intact. But when you start to change the content, you need to keep the same Keyword density and keyword count. This will keep the existing SEOed content in place.

Suggestion, do the changes in two steps. First change the template/cosmetics and clean up the CSS. But don't change the SEO elements or the content. And then clean up/SEO every other SEO element that has not been done.

After the page has been indexed, then start changing the content as needed, but keep in mind that the keywords used, their location on the page, and density will impact the rankings.

And in no way change the file name or paths. This will screw up everything.

If it is coded in a SEO Friendly way then it won't matter. I would say just keep the url structure the same.

You might find that your serp's vanish for a day or two but it will come back ....because when you make big changes google might take your site to the dance floor.
