Changing name servers IP

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by login, May 7, 2007.

I have moved from one VPS to another. Now I need to change my name servers IP.
I want to use the same name server as before. Should I just go to the registrar and register the domain as a name server even though its already a name server ?
I have 4 IP addresses on my new VPS. Whitch IP`s should I let the name servers point to ?

Thanks, green to the helper :)

Im in the process of doing the same thing myself actually... Is your nameserver already registered with your registrar? Are your IPs the same? If you now have different IPs you should re register. And the IP address you should point to is the one you are planning to use i assume.

The IP`s are not the same as before.
    I have 4 IP`s that I will use.
The name servers should be ns1 and ns2. What IP`s to point them to ?

if you are already on a vps...and you're just switching boxes...the only thing you should need to do is change the ips already assigned to the nameservers at your registrar...

and it doesn't matter which IPs you use...just pick 2 of them :)

Be careful doing this or your sites may be unreachable for a brief amount of time. It usually takes around 24-48 hours for DNS changes to propagate out around the entire Internet.

Thanks Stax_Daniel. I am switching host.
I can`t locate a place to change the ips already assigned, just a place to create name server.

So I just pick two ips, I do not understand the logic in that, but then again, maybe I don`t have to understand every thing :)

you are keeping the same domain name right?...what registrar do you have?

IPs are IPs...they are all the same...so it doesn't matter which ones you pick for the nameservers...

Same domain yes. Its on Dotster.
I may have gotten this backwards. But now I have two VPS with the same configuration, files and all, so what decides where my sites are then if not the IP in the name servers ?

interesting...it worked for me when i clicked it...

    https://secure.registerapi.com/KM/KnowledgeBase/script_view_document.php?data_id=828&view_revision=0

if that doesn't work...go to dotster, click help...type in nameserver...click the link that says "How do I update or modify the IP address for nameserver?"

Yep that's the ticket, find the area to update the nameservers and enter in your new ip addresses, one for each nameserver.

Did you get the main site copied over and all sub-accounts?

Hi cyanide. Yes, I got everything copied over now. The hosting company was struggling the whole day today for me.
A site of 2.5GB was not so easy to move they said.

I have found the place to make the name servers. I just have to make sure that everything is in place before I take the step.

I still do not understand how that IP thing works. Lets say the name servers get
    ns1.blahblah.com 123.456.789.123
    ns2.blahblah.com 123.456.789.124
How can they know that I also use 123.456.789.125 and 123.456.789.126 for my sites ?

Is there written something anywhere where I can read about this ?

And I am truing to figure out what body part that avatar of your is. Is there written something anywhere where I can read about that ?:D

Ha, that's a sexy part of the body... but it's not mine, so take it easy :D

    ok so..
Are these ip addresses supposed to represent your new ones ?

If so, you don't have to worry about 123.456.789.125 and 123.456.789.126
YOu only need 2 ip addresses, the other 2 can just sit there. YOu never know, one day you might need an ssl or you might decide to create 2 new nameservers later on

what are your plans for the other two IPs?...are you going to use one as a dedicated IP for your website?

ok, you'll use two of your ips for the nameservers,

then in assuming you are using cpanel, you'll assign each of your accounts with one of the other IPs as a dedicated IP (so you'll need 5 ips total)

Hmm. Maybe I got all this mixed up. Or I am a bit slow today :D
But cant I put domains on the same IPs I use for the name servers. I am doing that now.
    My name servers are at
    ***.**.***.93
    ***.**.***.94
I also have sites on that IPs.
