Changing Link Text. Any Problems?

I have decided I am trying to rank for a term that is too competitive right now and am changing the text in my links slightly.
So instead of, for example:"New Car Loans", I want to change them to "Loans for New Cars"

For new links I know that is not a problem ,but for existing links, like forum sigs, is that confusing for Search Engines and will they have to re spider those links?

In order for spiders to find altered text, they will need to be re-read/re-find it. That's certainly a given. For a time you'll likely have a huge cross over, but then, that is not too terribly bad... Some may even never convert.

On the bright side, I've heard that some variances in keywords can be a good thing, if for nothing else, you'll rank for both words (just not as high).

Good luck with your car links ;)

Yeah, I think its worth the switch since I just found out that i rank for a few long tail words, and phrases (that I wasn't shooting for), and there is a vacancy open in another.

Search engines do recrawl pages, and any changes which have taken place since the last crawling are definitely taken into account.

Don't try to change all the links, having a wide variety of anchor text is a goog thing.

I have done this 3-4 times thus far and have not dropped in PR but I have gained in rankings for more competetive keywords I had updated to.

Acheived a PR 2 in 6 weeks of launching the site and estimating a PR 4 if not a PR 3 during the next update.

So I have yet to see ill effects of changing my link text.

as a side note, how much luck do you have with forum sigs? Does that get you some decent PR really? How much, or how many forums do you post in to get a good effect?

Forum sigs are OK. In the beginning (2 months ago) they were 90%.
Now I get around 500 visits from form sigs a month, from 4 forums, and I spend a few hours a day on forums, mostly buy and sell areas.
Forum sigs are not neccessarily good for conversions, just numbers.

It's mostly other "Webmasters" looking to see what you are doing, not really buying anything.
Now I am starting to get visits from some music forums, that I just joined, those are more targeted to what I need.

if you change the link text, your rank will be effected because google and the other detect the content of your page with the text in your links
