It all depends on why you are blogging about the subject. If you are blogging about it and have a passion for it but dont' care about the earnings, then it doesn't matter. Contrary to popular belief you don't need to be passionate about something in order to make money from it. Should you be passionate about your BUSINESS? Yes, you should. Can you make money from things you aren't passionate about? Yes, you can. People are doing it all the time. Can you be passionate about something and make nothing out of it? Of course you can !...

There is no 'one answer is right" here. It all depends on you and your business model. Just be clear about what you are trying to achieve.

sure you might not be considered as a spammer, but you posted near crap advice thank you very much.

Oh by the way, I tend to ignore those whiny little clowns complaining about low adsense income and no clicks. I pretty much ignore those threads because there are so many similar threads about the same crap posted by noobs. You posted a link as part of your thread as a noob, I can't blame anyone for accusing you as a spammer. The "simple" link that you clicked from I'm guessing dexter.ss 's reply is in his signature WHICH you don't even have. That's what the signature is for. Learn to use it.

You guys are very hard on this OP. I won't judge him by his other posts on DP since I haven't seen any of them, but I actually think he has a very good point. IF you want to make money from your writing and you choose to write for a web site or blog it is no different than most writers. Do you really think a newspaper or magazine writer typically gets assigned to write about something they are passionate about? RFLOL - they write what the editors assign them and they write because they have a passion to write ... and they write what the editors assign so they can eat and pay bills!

I have a number of content sites and they make good money, along with other projects; enough to pay the bills and not have to work a day job. Some of the niches I am not so passionate about but I write and assign stories to contract writers that attract an audience who is looking to buy something related to that niche.

Like the OP said, if you write about something you are passionate about but which does not have any commercial value, don't expect to make any money, no matter how passionate you are about it! Save passion for your romance or hobbies but don't expect to make money just because you have a blog about something you are passionate about! You really think a plumber is passionate about his work? Or even most doctors, lawyers and accountants?

The whole "Write about something you're passionate about" advice is just wrong in most cases. You should be passionate about making money from your web site and let that keep you motivated instead of pretending that you'll "stick with it" only if you write about your passion. Maybe you don't want to write about credit cards, but only "noobs" will believe they can make real money simply because they start a blog about something they really, really like; that's a hobby not a business.

I agree partly on this, specifically the part where writing what you like won't make you a lot of money, this might be true if we are talking about adsense. If I write about what I like and if there are readers then that means:
content -> traffic -> advertisers paying you for posts or ads -> make money
