Change Permanent Setting Wordpress, need help

Hi Gang,

If I want to display URL for the post in category "C" like below:

http://mydomain.com/category/C

to

http://mydomain.com/C

how do I change the permanent setting wordpress? Remove the display of "category" in URL.

I though it would be easy, so i tried but could not.

What i googled & came to know that it is not possible to remove the Category Base entirely, without breaking the category pages. We have to use some word in place of 'category'. Of course i might be wrong.

And i guess we can fake a lil bit, like creating separate pages[page templates] and showing posts of different categories in different pages.

So i also stand in the queue, curious to know how to do it
