    Hi,

I have heard that it is a good idea to change TITLE element for each page to the subject of that page.

I wonder if the same rule applies for the Description META tag.

Thank you for any tips !

    Matthew.

Don't waste your time for description meta. It hold no importance anymore. Y and G now selects dynamic text from the page in search description.

META description is important in SEO. If you missed META description, Google can use dynamic data from your page. However if you use META description then you can give the informative description to the visitor with targeted keywords too.

Meta description should be relevant to pages. Search engine is displaying this information. So even you are in the page 1 if your descriptions are poorly written you will not get the visitors

If you are going through the trouble of having a different Title tag for each page, why not change the description too? It will take you what, 10 seconds?:)
By the way, yes you should definately do both.

If you have say 4000 pages, 10 seconds per page is way too long. 40000 seconds = 666 HOURS = 16.66 WEEKS at 40hrs/week.

However, having UNIQUE content THROUGHOUT every page, including all header content, is VERY important.

The page description is one of the the most important on page SEO items...along with page title, h1 tags, and of course the page text. Make sure your keywords are somewhere in your page description. In addition, your description should be a "call to action" that makes people want to click on your site when they see the description in the serps.

Well, that is my problem, over 4000 pages to update whenever I need to change them. The seconds DO add up fast.

My solution is that all of my pages are automatically generated by a FoxPro program that I wrote. So, when I need to make changes, I spend a few minutes changing the FP program, then as each page is updated, all of the underlying code is also updated at the rate of 700 pages per hour. The only problem with that solution is that pages with outdated/buggy HTML can persist for months before being corrected.

And, after reading this thread, I realized that all of my pages need to have the META tags reworked. Next week I will change the FP program, then over the next year or so update all of the pages with better META tags.

Meta Description are still important part of SEO. They gives a snippet of what your page is all about. It is also important from users point of view.

Ummmm.... I would check your math...

    4000 pages x 10 sec/page = 40000 seconds total

    40000 secs / (60 sec/min) = 666.66 min (convert to min)

    666.66 min / (60 min/hr) = 11.11 hrs (convert to hours)

11.11 hrs / (40 hrs/ work wk) = 0.278 work week (convert to work week based on 40 hr work week).

And to answer the OP's original question...

Yes having good <meta name="description"> elements is VERY important. While it does not help your rankings at Google, a good <meta name="description"> elements CAN increase your click-thru-rate on organic listings when they do rank well enough to get an impression.

Google will typically show it as the snippet if 1) that URL does not have a DMOZ entry and 2) every keyword in the search phrase appears in the <meta name="description"> element. Because of the latter, I try to make sure that all keywords from my <title> are also included in the value of the <meta name="description"> element's content= attribute since the keywords/keyword phrases in the <title> should be the keywords/keyword phrases most often used in searches to find the page.

If you've SEO'd your site well then each page will be targeting different keyword phrases in the <title> element and therefore each page should have a unique value <meta name="description"> element content= attribute.

I highly suggest changing the meta description as this is what search engines will crawl and display. For e-commerce sites with 1,000+ products having customized page titles, descriptions, and tags works very well.
