Maybe you could apply for a small sub cat in directories, even though there's not much to build on. Then you could start building the type of category in you bookmarks that you would like to find. Maybe new directories that accept listings for free, for link exchange, for payment...
It's that culture clash again. Our category Computers: Internet: Searching lists sites primarily for Web searchers. So we assess directories for their value to the browsing public. Whereas the SEO/webmaster looking to promote sites has quite a different perspective. PortProphecy sums it up. They are looking for a list of directories to submit to. There are a number of such lists around, well-organised for the webmaster to assess value for money. You'll find some under http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Promotion/Directories/ though some of the general guides in the main http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/ category may also be helpful.
OK, thanks for the link. Didn't notice that category. This category includes a handful of directory lists, but only one of these seems to be a valuable resource (Ranking Directories). And none of the really popular directory lists are listed in this category: http://info.vilesilencer.com (Excellent resource!) http://www.seocompany.ca/directory/web-directories.html http://www.best-web-directories.com http://www.directorylist.org http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php http://www.geocities.com/site_vortex...s_Portals.html http://www.articletrader.com/directories/ (Not only a list, but includes a great tool for tracking directory submissions!) Sorry, I know I'm nudging again.
Don't put yourself down Annie. I bet Computers eds would love your help in certain categories. As a non-technical type, I get nervous in large areas of Computers, but there are places I get by. PortProphecy - now that category is one that could use some beefing up. Why not go for it? [Edited to add] I think we need to make it a bit more prominent for the SEO/webmaster. So I've added an @link from the Searching: Directories category. It may not show up immediately on the public side, but it's there.
Great idea! I think the vast majority of people are looking for directories for SEO purposes, not for general browsing...that's what googling is for.
The great majority of people use SEs to search these days. That's a fact. But if even a tiny fraction of the world's billions of online users prefer a directory even some of the time, then a good directory will continue to get traffic. But I personally feel that the directory market is now at saturation point.
Funny you should ask. No, I have got my hands full right now. I can't imagine how people have time to run...oh...say 112 directories. Check this post in Solicitations & Announcements: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=888519&postcount=37
