Chance of ranking top with "multi-topic" site?

    Hello everybody,

I' running a q&a/article site with different topics covered (you know, categories like "business","health" etc.).
This means two different articles aren't really related to each other.
Is it still possible to reach good rankings with single article pages (maybe on not too competitive keyword phrases)?

If not, do you always buy a new domain (which may include keywords in domain-name) if you start a new project (and have hundreds of them)?
Where do you buy your domains and/or space then?
I'm from Europe and I'd really like to take a server located in the U.S. next time.

The short answer to your question is that "yes" it is possible to rank highly for different topics on one domain.

On google especially, it is not that difficult to be ranked for a search term that is not even on the content of your page. If your site is ranked highly enough in general, and you get enough inbound links with your keywords as the anchor text you can make pretty much any page or site rank. This of course needs to be done without getting penalized for devious tactics.

If your content is unique, you don't have to have different domains for each articles. I think, having a decent sitemap and some external links to your article pages will help ranking.

    Thanks.

The problem is, I don't think the site as a whole will rank highly BEFORE any good articles will do. Hehe.

It is true that if the site is new, it will take a while (min. 6 months) for google to start ranking it well. However, in the end, articles don't tend to occupy the number 1 SERP's. And if they do rank highly, it is usually only a temporary result of being listed on the homepage of a major site.

well simply copying every article will not help at all . what you can do is read an article and summarize it in you own words ... Building a site need time .. Simply copying , even a child can do it ;)

In theory it is possible, but it still will be a lot harder since you can't focus your marketing efforts on a specific niche/topic. It would work though if all your articles are so good that people post natural links to them themselves.

This is exactly what I'm trying right now.
I just tried with some misspellings with less than 100k results in Google, but I think it is very hard to get some links for misspelled pages ?!
