C|Net is carrying an article looking into new technology MySpace is rolling out to combat user violation of copyright laws on their pages. Called 'Take Down, Stay Down', the service will attempt to ensure that once content is removed because of a complaint it can never be uploaded again. "Copyright owners have access to Take Down Stay Down free of charge, according to a release from MySpace. If the social-networking service receives a takedown notice regarding a copyrighted clip hosted through its MySpace Videos hosting service, MySpace's new feature will take a 'digital fingerprint' of the video and add it to a copyright filter that blocks the content from being uploaded again. '(It's) the ability to have a piece of content imprinted and put in a database so we can identify it,' said Vance Ikezoye, CEO of Audible Magic." http://news.com.com/New+MySpace+cop...s+brows/2100-1030_3-6183162.html?tag=nefd.top My concern is that any technology that can be used for "good" can also be used for "evil".. this same technology could be extrapolated to erase dissenting views off the Net.
I highly doubt that the system will be in place for that long. So many features similar to this have been put in place to prevent the duplication or illegal distribution of copyrighted content, and as we all know this content is still readily available all over the internet. I believe that the system will work for some time, however will be overcome with some ingenious method to bypass the "digital fingerprint". Afterall, MySpace is not regarded highly for its security in computer security groups and orginazations.
