I have found a domain that I want to buy but the only tld left is the .cc

Does anyone have experiance with .cc domains? Will they be less efective for SEO? Let me know. Thanks.

.cc is the domain used for the Turkish part of Cyprus or something like that, so yeah, it may affect SEO for that matter.

    Wikipedia states:
".cc is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian territory. It is administered by VeriSign through a subsidiary company eNIC, which promotes it for international registration as "the next .com"; .cc was originally assigned October 1997 to eNIC Corporation of Seattle WA by the IANA. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus also uses the .cc domain, along with .nc.tr. This is due to them not being recognized as a sovereign state by anyone except Turkey."

In Webmaster Tools you can geo-target the domain wherever you want.
I can't comment on the SEO value of a .cc domain because I've never owned one, tested side by side.

But, I'd be careful that part of the name isn't trademarked or you may lose it if challenged.

Yeah my understanding was that it doesn't matter what type of domain it is... Most people say .com=.info=.cc=.whatever although .com always looks the best

You can geo-target only generic TLDs, not ccTLDs like .cc. It would already be assigned to some specific country.
It is a country level domain name. So as .co.uk is good for UK search, .cc is good for for a particular location (.cc is for Cocos Islands):)

In a simple explanation: yes. It is far better to go with a .com even for SEO purposes. More importantly, if you plan to grow the site, you would lose a lot of recurring traffic due to people going to the .com of what they *thought* was your site. People might not remember the .cc Besides when have you ever seen a .cc in SERPS? Maybe you'd rank in SERPS within Cyprus and Cocos Islands, but that's about it. It's almost a regional domain that would limit you from global traffic.

Perhaps adding a word to it, using a synonym, or some other method may be a good approach.

It's mostly about destination traffic, if you do the .cc bit, people will be referring to your site while going to the .com version of the site -- unless if you made the .cc fit in with the name like del.icio.us

.COM simply is a better name, however there's been many instances of websites like "tvduck.cc" that've got huge through word of mouth. All it is, the person who's owning .com of a popular site with a different TLD will be raking in cash from your typo traffic.

    I own a couple cc's, one that ranks very well (it's keyword.cc) - I wouldn't be blinded by the tld - just don't expect type-in traffic ;)

I'd suggest you to go with another domain.
It'll surely effect your SEO as google will auto target the content according to ccTLD.

Check for any keyword in google search. Do you find a .CC in the first 5 pages? This should answer your question.
