I have finally added a category for free directories. The reason I never had one before is because alot of free directories turned paid. But I guess I will just have to keep an eye on things.

Be the first to list your site under Free Directories at index-it.net

I find that these listings need a bit more attention than those in other categories. Quite a few directories have switched to a paid/reciprocal model shortly after launch.

Absolutely right. I think it best to create a free/paid section that you monitor. This way it cuts out the truly free onles like dmoz and whatnot that are strictly free or nonprofit/etc.

What are you going to do with those directories submitted to free directories category and finally turn into paid directories?

I decided the best thing to do for now is make a note to the viewer stating that:

"Note: Alot of directories that are free tend to turn to paid over time. Some of the listings here may no longer be a free directory, in either case index-it.net highly recommendeds that you visit the directories listed below."

I also added a note on the free-directories submit page that states:

"In the event that your free directory turns to a paid directory your listing will be moved below the directories that still offer free submissions. This is done for the benifit of users."

I think this is a fair way to do things, what do you guys think?

I'd move the listing to a category better suited to paid directories.

So do you think I should say that if their directory turns paid that it will be moved to the paid directory category?

Sure. It's no longer a free directory and wouldn't it be better suited in the paid directories category?

We're slowly moving them as I'm trying to maintain relevance for our Free Directories category. There's quite a bit more to do as it's presently one of our worst categories (past editor) and I've also set to inactive a couple of listings with very large pending queues and no new sites added since September.

As a paid directory only, you will not have a loot of submissions on the Free directory category, so it’s fast to visit and see if they are still free, if not just change it to paid.
