Categories question ? HELP

I started a link directory about a week back. I imported a dump sql of 3500+ categories so that visitors can submit their site to the perfect category possible.

But I thought, if I have that and my directory is quite a new one, the advertisers (submitted links) won't have any benefit of getting traffic.

    But what about traffic ?

I don't think anyone would suggest me to use 3500+ categories now, but see my site in my signature.
Should I have that many main categories only, or put a few categories in each ?

NOTE : Please don't submit any links now as the directory is being designed nicely according to my satisfaction so that I don't need to redesign in again and again. When it shall be completed fully, I shall announce.

I suggest you to add categories at your own as importing a dump sql of categories is not really a good idea IMO. Add them in your own way.

As Don said - it is not advisable to use a category dump. Create your own unique category structure. That includes main categories and sub categories.
