First things first, whichever bank you're with, when you hand the cheque in, you need to "endorse" it on the back. It's an American concept: there's a space on the back marked for endorsements, its a few lines.

Now I forget whether you're meant to write your name or sign it. So I do both! Never had a problem. You can't leave it blank or you might have problems.

Then simply use a paying in slip and pop it in the envelope or hand over at the counter. I cross the GBP out and replace with a USD.

I'm with HSBC, they send you a letter a few days later giving the breakdown of the final amount deposited to your account. They tell you the currency rate used and the deduction of their fee. I forget how much the fee is but it is around a fiver I think. With some banks you can save on this fee by handing in several cheques at the same time but HSBC charge you per cheque so this strategy doesn't work. Also, I think American cheques expire after 6 months (like English cheques) so don't wait too long to use them.

I suggest you decrease your threshold for cheques with Clickbank to the minimum, then get the 3 cheques asap. Then switch to direct deposit which is far superior. Your first three cheque fees will eat into these small cheques but it will be worth it because you'll soon be on direct deposit which doesn't have any fees at all and is way more convenient.

With HSBC is 6 pounds the fee. However, they are very fast in clearing the check. I've moved to Au and here the fee is $20 and wait four to six weeks to clear a check. So, you are lucky to be in UK.

I am also from UK and I rememeber my first 3 checks :)
now I am on DD for long time...

but back then the charge was £10 per check (HSBC) and it took 5 working days to clear the check.

PS: I also recommend swtiching to DD assp, there is no charges! and the payments are weekly!
(except the 2.5 dollar payment fee charge, which will be deducted from your account automaticly)

HSBC charged me £12 for the last cheque that was $888

The best I had was Nationwide that was more like £6 but I don't have that account anymore.

At the end of the day we get screwed on the exchange rate and charge, get used to it whether cheque or dd.

We're still better off than when the exchange rate was £1:$2
