I had reserved judgement on Carter's visit with Hamas. At various times through all sorts of battles and wars there are efforts at peace talks by people/nations/etc. that don't get publicity.

Of recent Egypt has quietly tried to broker some level of peace between Hamas and Israel.

Carter's effort was different in that it was widely publicized.

The articulation by Hamas that they don't recognize Israel as a nation is a non-starter. Hamas's unwillingness to accept the term peace TREATY and replace it with truce is another non-starter.

With two long standing peace treaties between Israel and Jordan and Egypt, during which there have been no fights, no gun battles, no warring and Israel returned land to both nations.....that is something that has meat.

Hamas is a non-government of a non-country. They took full control of Gaza by a violent uprising against Fatah, killing Fatah's soldiers and representatives, and in the end, took the captured unarmed Fatah soldiers, stripped them and shot them dead.

Hamas has the credibility of the most vile and dangerous beasts alive, IMHO.

I just watched Carter have an interview with Jeremy Paxman on BBC newsnight and he said Hamas would be willing to have a total ceasfire if Israel also would agree to a Ceasfire on their part but Israel declined, says it all really. Carter has gotten further with Hamas than anyone has, Israel needs to grow up and start talking and negotiating instead of ignoring reality.

EarlPearl, Hamas, beasts, that is interesting, I could imagine the uproar if I called the Zionist Jews beasts.

i think they backed out of that statement. nevertheless we always have to talk to our worst enemies to make the best peace. their problems are so simple that it is ridicules that it is taking them 60 years to resolve it.
now it is important for me to say this again that i think they already have an agreement and we shall see it soon.

They were elected to government but couldn't work out a power sharing agreement with Fatah so they waged a civil war for the rest of the power they couldn't get through democratic means,

    Hamas doesn't recognize Israel.
there were rumors after the meeting, but those terrorists mate the things clear:

"Group leader Mashaal says his organization accepts establishment of Palestinian state within 1967 borders, but will not recognize Jewish state."

But you forgot to add that he said he would be willing to live peacefully side by side with Israel in the 1967 borders but would not recognize it as a legitamate state, just as Russia does not recognize Kosovo.

he just grant 10 years of quite if Israel will return to 1967 borders.
"Masshal adds Hamas will grant Israel a 10-year truce if it retreats to pre-1967 lands"
so, they want us to return to 1967 borders for 10 years of quite? 10 years of quite it's mean 10 years of building huge terror infrastructure without any problem.

i am not sugesting that this ten year plan is a good idea but i would encourage a two year truce and this should give time for the peace negotiations to reach a solution and help improve the relashions between the two people.

    Hamas won't honor a truce or even a cease-fire. That's proven.

Both sides, as you've said, have proven they can't be relied on to do a "cease fire". Why would things be different this time?

Do you honestly think there's any solution to the Palestinian/Israel problem? Since 1948 no progress has been made.

If the two sides don't radically change their thinking, there is no possible solution.

I already said both sides have broken cease-fires. That means both sides.

    I don't trust either party to honor a cease-fire.

i think there is a peace progress going on now and it must be given a chance and support. a cease fire will be a good thing at this time
i do belive there is a solution to all of their diffrences, but they keep on arguing about who is right and who is wrong.and i belive a strong democratic palestanian state is the best gurantee for security of israel
