Hello all, I'm trying to work out why a competitors site ranks top for a google search. The site is www.badb.co.uk/acatalog/Deactivated_Guns.html and the keyphrase is "deactivated guns". The page has no backlinks, PR0 and very little content. My competing site has 44 backlinks, PR4 but is nowhere for that keyphrase. How are they doing it?? Any help would be much appreciated! Cheers, Jon
Their home page has PR3 and 258 backlinks, The page title uses those keywords, The keywords are in the content + the page is named Deactivated_ Guns.html - all of these factors help
What is your page? Hard to analyze why they are better than you without knowing what the comparison is.
thanks for the speedy replies. My site is www.deactivated-guns.co.uk - its currently hovering around the twenties. On paper the PR and backlinks seem to be better than the other site (and its no.1 for a fair amount of more specific keywords). Its got me stumped (but i am new to this!). Jon
You can't look at PR and backlinks in a tunnel - there is relevance involved. www.yahoo.com has a PR of 9 and hundreds of thousands of backlinks, yet their page is nowhere to be seen in a search for 'deactivated guns'. 1) You do have alot of backlinks, but it seems like a good number of them are links with the phrase 'Arundel Militaria' - that really does very little to help you with a search result for 'deactivated guns'. You need to get backlinks from other sites to your site where the anchor text is 'deactivated guns'. 2) You are kind of splitting your search relevance power between 2 pages - your main page and deactivatedguns.htm. the 'deactivatedguns.htm' is #2 in allinanchor because every page of your site links to it with 'deactivated guns'. Your main page is somewhere in the top 10 for allinanchor:deactivated guns. If 'deactivated guns' is a main keyword, you may want to link to your home page from all pages of your site with that text (instead of the word 'Home'). 3) Having a page rank highly in allinanchor but not as good in the normal rankings usually means that your on-page SEO could use some improvement. 'deactivated guns' appears in your domain, title, and only once on your actual page. It would probably help to use that phrase as a header (<h1>) on your page, and then also mention that phrase atleast a few more times. You could also use bold or italics around the phrase as that adds some weight as well.
