Can't get my head round keywords.

I hear a lot about keywords, but what is meant by this word? Is it the words inside my <meta> tag on my source page? Or is it word used on my page (any part or just the first few lines)?
What is a good keyword? Is it a word that a lot of people look for in a search engine? Would this not make it difficult for my page to be found among all the other pages that have the same popular word?
I went to a google site where keywords for my site were suggested. My site is:

http://www.footballreporter.co.uk (sorry, I am not allowed to link as I am new here)

and the word that were suggested were. football shirts, football tickets and some other words that I had not used on my page.
The words I use most on that page are probably: score, goal, shot (but not with a gun), cross (not religious) and win (not gambling). Names of cities (teams) and countries come and go as I update my reports. I do not use the word report in my reports, but that would be one of the words someone would use if they wanted to find a page like mine.
I would appreciate it if someone could take a look at my page and give me some advice.
Also do I need to have a different <meta> for every page on my site?
What does it mean to buy a keyword? Who owns them?
Lots of questions, but hopefully the answers will help others too.

A keyword is the word that, as you hope, people will find your site by. You should do additional research on that - that's a really broad question It would be better that you do a bit of reading before posting.

You should use keywords both in a meta tag and on the pages. You'd better also use it in headlines. It is also wise to concentrate on some words than trying to cover all keywords associated with football. Try to focus on the words which you can beat. It's no use to optimize your pages to football ticket (though it is a popular search term) as if you check in Google, it produces 16,100,000 results and the average PR of the first page sites is 5.8. So you will hardly beat it. If you focus on football ticket prices, you'll see that G. shows 1,480,000 and first page sites have average PR3 (appr.), so it is more realistic though still very difficult. Do you see the point?

You can find the keyword + synonym analysis here. Besides, if you might try to research not football but the words you listed (football score, goal, etc)
