Not a developer question per se but this seemed to be the best RSS forum I saw in a google search so here goes. Does anyone have a good reader not listed here or want to refute any of my points? I swear that I've tried a ton of readers (both software and web-based) and not one is perfect (hence, why they are free?) Covered below are Google Reader, Bloglines, Newsgator, Greatnews, Awasu, and Snarfer. What popular FREE ones am I missing and would FeedDemon be that much better?? I am looking for something that can aggregate, say, 200-300 feeds. I am developing a site where I will need news snippets from dozens and dozens of sources. Right now, I have 78 feeds loaded. I am primarily working on my own machine so I'm not too concerned about being able to use on another computer. Here are some pros/cons of what I have found and if someone knows of a better site where I can post this, by all means, help me out! Online: Google Reader PROS: Updates quickly. Awesome headline set-up that lets you look at several headlines from several feeds on one page. Can download files so that you can view offline and presumably put on a mobile device. Clean import. CONS: No search?! Doesn't fully load busy feeds. Seems kind of glitchy in firefox as a loading picture pops up and hangs there when I click on settings or 'manage subscriptions' to re-arrange my folders. Bloglines PROS: A pretty effective search (finds most items but not all). CONS: Messy import/export. Even less effective at loading all news items. Newsgator PROS: Updates the most quickly and the most completely out of online readers. CONS: Bare bones search. Google Ads between occasional stories. Under the feed list, it says, "Drag-n-drop feeds" but this function doesn't seem to work in Firefox. Software: Greatnews PROS: Updates even more accurately and quickly than any of the online readers (have been able to see stories before they even pop up on the actual site). Finds more items in search than online readers (but not a perfect search). Virtually no load time in looking at different feeds/stories. Drag and drop feed from folder to folder. Easy to read numerous headlines at once. Synchronizes w/ Bloglines. CONS: Can't search all feeds, only one group. Can't bring up all search items on one page. Can't customize arrangement of folders or feeds (default is alphabetical). Doesn't display correct time the story was written or uploaded through software. Snarfer PROS: Essentially the same as Greatnews though it appears to be between Greatnews and Newsgator in feed completeness and speed. A big upgrade to Greatnews visually. May move folder to another folder in addition to feeds. Synchronizes w/ Bloglines. Search function displays found items from all groups and in one list but... CONS: Search does not show dates of the found items. Can't customize the search. Biggest gripe is that you can't sort all feeds by date within feed group. Each group instead has list of 10-30 news items for each feed, each organized by date. Still can't organize feeds and folders un-alphabetically. Awasu PROS: In line with GreatNews in terms of update completeness. Can organize folders un-alphabetically (just not feeds) with drag-n-drop. CONS: Cannot view all feeds in a group. Slow in updating feeds. Does not list any time or author next to story titles. Search function does not allow for sorting by date and appeared to not find many items. Can't move folder within another one with drag-n-drop. I'm sure that I am missing some things here. What RSS reader is very good that I have left off of this list??
Thanks for the response though I am not looking to add an RSS feed to my own website at the moment as I havent developed it yet. I am looking for the best rss reader for the massive amount of research that I have to do before I develop it. Has anyone used Pluck? I've been onto the site but cant find a free download anywhere.
