#2 is bringing probably the same amount of visitors .... so don't worry ... work on the site and eventually you will bring the competition down !

I dis agree:eek: just working on your site will not do the work in the long" you need to work on your anchor text and create more blogs and hyper link the key words.

thats how you create good anchor links"

I buy links. Most everyone buys links. These days, you can do a search for any competitive or semi-competitive keyword and you'll see links that have been purchased. It works and will continue to work until Google gets away from a link-relevancy search engine. And who knows when that will be.

The number of links is a lot less important than the quality, diversity, and type of links.

If your 15,000 links come from web directories and forum signatures, and your competition's come from a large number of different sites, given editorially on merit, that would explain things better than age. I don't know whether that's the case, but just counting links is like trying to figure out how much your car is worth by weighing it.

    Schools, universities, educational institutes.

The theory is they transfer 'trust' or 'authority' to your site that can help with rankings.

    Same with .gov sites.

So how do you get links from these sites? Do you need to be a student there or something?

edu sites are those whose tld is .edu , but I don't think that they would make a difference , it is a legend , imo.
If I were you I would buy some sitewide links from a related big site , that helped a lot for me.

I think the age different is essential factor in SERP, so you must have a good point in another factor...

    Nice problem to have!

I think the domain age plays a big role in this [which you obviously can't do anything about]. However, backlinks from "authoritative" helps.

you need to blog about the schools football team and campus games, etc... make sure you add in the city state, address and what their known for, as a school be ver descriptive about them so they will consider your content for a additional web page on their web site.then they will add you to their web site thats called deep links and thats what you want" :D do a search in my sleek business sig line blog for the death of darrent williams.

H1 tags are really really good.
Make sure to make proper headings for your content, like h1, h2, h3.
Google will check the content and increase you. Also make sure to make the title of your page the keyword for what you want to move up on or at least include that keyword in your title.

Eye study reports disagree. #1 should bring more than double the traffic than the #2 position.

good replies, so out of my last post, i got these out of the way, but by no means is it the end of it:
    edu -- 2 edu links.
directory - submitted to couple of paid directories..no word on the link yet..wasnt instant..hmm? ps I am already in DMOZ
    wordpress blog - yup, done.
long tail keys - starting to go for it

Also I optimized some on page seo more, better meta tags, bolding proper items, alt tags etc.

P.S. I have been trying to push this up for like a good month now. I am seeing some traffic increase too but Its because of new content that I added, which is always good :) still #2!

getting 15k links doesn't say much. i can tell you for sure that getting links from sites that have nothing to do with your industry is almost a waste of time. they help you in the long run with your PR but not with the ranking. as mentioned before try getting some .edu links. try posting on some .edu forums and have your link in the sig.

do most of your links have the same anchor text? SE can see if you only have one anchor text and you will go down in the SERP because as far as they are concerned this means artificial linking. try using more anchor texts that contain the main keyword you are trying to rank better but change the rest of the text.

also a good internal linking can help you.

i've heard more and more people saying that alt tags are not read by SE and useless. tell me if it helps you.

this is what i can think of right now.

    hope this was useful.
