Google can reach to your web page through different URLs, this may create a confusion of duplicate content for search engine. To avoid this, we choose a preferred path for the web page or say canonical path for the web page.
If you don’t set a preferred path this may raise canonical issues/ errors.

    More about it here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.in/2009/02/specify-your-canonical.html

    hi.
When we do not use www in the serach engine then this situation is called canonical issue. SEo take both url with www and without www differently. Multiple URL for the same page can be a problem in a SEO.

Actually, canonicalisation is not only a matter of www/no www variants of one site. It is helpful in some other cases when two pages have the same or practically the same content. For example, if it is an online shop there may be sorting pages which are duplicates so they should be canonicalised and target those pages which will be the ones to rank in Google. For example, if we have www.site.com/gifts-for-dad.htm and www.site.com/gifts-for-dad.htm?sortby=price|asc the latter page should canonicalise the former with the help of rel=canonical

The canonical issue can be sold very easy with a permanent 301 redirect.
In my opinion the professional way would be to redirect from non-www to www.
