Cannot crack SERP position #5 in google

I'm looking for ideas on how to pass position #5 in google with 33 million results. The site is 6 years old so it has some stability, and I have not done any linkbuilding in nearly 6 months. All the typical article marketing, blog comments, bookmark directories, etc. have been exhausted.

Any new ideas, or is cracking the top 5 with 33 million results going to be a nack breaker?

Difficult to say without knowing who your competition is....

Can you tell use the keyword you're targeting and your site?

Without further information, I would try something viral, something that brings you a lot of buzz and spreads by itself across all social sites.

I've not done it myself, but some people in other forums have mentionned buying up similar themed sites and hosting them in different places. Or building a few satelite sites hosted in different places ...

How much forum marketing have you done on niche specific forums? Across how many different forums?
How much of your content is completely unique and useful?
How much social marketing have you done? Do you have alot of very targeted followers on your social media accounts?

The best way to move up on competitive SERPs is to become more of an authority on your niche that your competitors. That means becoming very active in your niche community, via forums, blogs and social media. make sure everyone in your niche knows who you are and what you offer-- not by spamming them to death, but by providing very useful content or information that they perhaps wouldn't be able to find elsewhere.

Amen. Ranking up takes a lot of effort, and becoming an authority is probably one of the most fire-proof methods you can try, because then it's not only you who links to your site, but everybody who has something to say about that niche will reference back to you as *the* guru in that particular niche... getting you obviously more link juice.

Ever think about building links to your already existing links? This may give you a little extra "juice." Just a thought....

Do also some deep linking, i.e., linking to internal pages. Few people do that, and yet you can score quite well for many long-tail keywords with pages that are not the main page.

And the bonus: As those pages grab themselves pagerank, and they point also usually to your home page, you are pushing the whole site up in the rankings...

The first thing I would do is check your competition. How many links do they have? From what sources are their links from?

Find out those answers and redirect your linking strategy to match theirs. Never EVER give up!
