Cancel subscription vs cancel payment

Today I need advise, sort of a matter of principle.

We were subscribed to a monthly service which sends out lists of websites where you can register etc which will supposedly improve your ranking, give you back links.

So on 11 May 2010 I wrote an email to the service provider to cancel our subscription. The email was acknowledged with the expected question of why, what is wrong. To which I responded.

Then on 27 May 2010 Paypal deducted the next payment from our account. I then went to cancel the recurring payment manually.

The service provider now claims "it is the buyers responsibility to cancel any accounts or subscriptions they may have, not the seller".

This does not sound fair to us. We'd like to know your feeling on the issue as we also provide premium services to customers on our website. We were of the opinion that if a customer cancel subscription we (the service provider) is suppose to cancel payment as well. Not?
