I'm looking to sign up with commission junction (cj.com) and it's asking me to choose desired currency claiming that I won't be able to change it anytime in the future. I'm tempted to choose Canadian Dollars, because that's my home currency, but would I be sacrificing anything? Do they apply some weird exchange rates or something/ Would I be better off signing up with US dollars as desired currency and just collect US$ in my US account? Somebody, please help
Go with Canadian dollars. Either CJ will do the conversion from USD to CAD, or you'll have to do it yourself. Your bank may charge fees to do a currency conversion, so it's probably not worth it to get paid in USD and then exchange the money yourself.
I know I could exchange US dollars for Canadians easily, that I wasn't concerned with. I'm more concerned about how commission junction pays commissions in foreign currency. I can imagine that most of the sponsors do business in US dollars. Hence if you promote a product from a sponsor that pays (for example) US$25 per sale, you would get US$25 from CJ provided your account is in US dollars. Where as if you choose the payment in Canadian dollars, CJ may only send me $24 Canadian or less (I'm just shooting blanks, i don't know how it works, hence I ask). I mean my question is - does CJ pay fair equivalent of the commission earned even if my account is in the currency other than the US$, which is without doubt the currency CJ gets paid from their advertisers in. Do I make any sense to anyone still?
CJ should use the current exchange USD to CAD exchange rate to pay you. If you have more questions, just give them a call on Monday - http://www.cj.com/about/contact.html .
Its probably easier if you accept the payment in USD. After you reach some amount, you can exchange to CAD.
