What do fellow Canadians think of the Native blockades and self govt issues? I grew up beside Kanawake Reserve (Mohawk) just outside Montreal, and my school was 30 - 40% Mohawk, so I have some experience. My thoughts are, that all the native issues couldn't be resolved in 500 years, even if we gave back the whole of Canada, they would still be squabbling over, who gets what. By keeping the reserve and band council model, we are doing these people no good. They are left isolated from Canadian society, and cheated by the chiefs and band councils. Some live well, and others live in squalor. By living on the Govt dole, it also keeps them less educated, and less likely to succeed. My thought Determine which individuals meet "Native status" then give every last one of them, a deed to a parcel of crown land (say 3 acres) of their choosing anywhere in their home territory. The land can never be sold and must be passed to their heirs. Take all the funds that would be spent on native issues over the next 20 years, and put it in a trust account, and pay the interest to all with Native status. Now all natives would get their fair share, and not get screwed by the band councils. From there on out, they get nothing more than any other Canadian, they would be slowly integrated into Canadian society. They could preserve their culture in native centers, like churches, or something similar, where they all could gather. We need to do something, that will settle these claims once and forever. So everyone can move on. What are your thoughts?
