Canadian and US listings for Google

    Hello,

If I want to target both Canadian and US users, am I better off getting a .com and hosted it on a US server? Or a .ca on a Canadian server? I am assuming I should use .com with US server as US is a lot more competitive, so we will need that edge for the US market.... and Canada being a less competitive search market, it would be easier for us to rank on Canadian searches without having the edge of a .ca and Canadian server.

    Any suggestions?

    THanks,
    Rob

I feel your instinct is correct: go with .com - if the domain name is available in both. Develop links from both countries from the start. That makes it more likely that you will rank in both at some point.

Geo-location is an important factor in the ranking methods of all of the major search engines - even when the user does not request a country-specific search. Traditionally, the major search engines have used two common criteria to determine geo-location: (1) the presence of a Country Code Top Level Domain Name (cc TLD, such as yoursite.ca), or (2) for generic TLDs like .com, .net, etc, they use the IP address of the server that hosts the site. From time to time, Google has said that they will also sometimes look at the domain name registration information, but their use of that information has been haphazard and unpredictable, so its always been best to stick to either #1 or #2.

Google has recently enhanced its methods to give webmasters greater control over geo-location. Using the Webmaster Tools console, you can set your preferred geo-location for your entire domain with optional settings for individual directories. There haven't been many reports of people having tremendous success in trying to use multiple geo-location settings using this tool, but it sounds like something you should look into.
