Quantity , true , but more is the quality , and consider the keywords u will work on , that's true it has nothin to do with pr , but it will help the serp , so u can do it both in the same time , generating traffic , and getting backlinks ( increasing PR )

ok, i see that there is a little mess about this

1. first of all you can get pagerank from backlinks, but remember that any website shares only 85% of pagerank /divided by number of websites on it. So if you get a backling from PR8 site but there will be 1000 other links on it, you will get very small amount of pagerank

2. You are not loosing any pagerank if you have other links at your page, don`t worry about it

3. You getting pagerank as well from any subpage of your page which is at google index, so absolutely submit at webmaster tools site map (best at .xml) format and make unigue quality content, and you can check there how many pages from your page are indexed (one advice - don`t copy any content from other websites, because this will be duplicated content and your page will no go up)

4. Here is simple model of pagerank PR(A) = (1d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

5. There are around 200 factors how google judge your page and this has really infuence how your page is at results and at today`s time pagerank has very small infuence, so don`t worry about it
