I am setting up a new domain but before I do should I consider buying an expired domain name that has some age and links to it? With so many new websites popping up every day I wonder if is it possible to rank any keywords with a fresh domain name and start from sctratch.

If you equip your new domain with good content and do some good SEO I think you won't have problems with your ranking even if its a new domain.

For good ranking of websites, some tasks are needed to be done. Submit your domain in various bookmarking site for example, stumpleupon, delicious, reddit and also in facebook pages and in your own facebook profile. At the same time, you can search for google adword, google trends and use google analytics.

If you searching on expireddomains.net then you must filter out the bad domains and choose the best ones. Check for backlinks history, fake PR, DA, PA, CF, TF.

You can rank a new domain, all you need it:
    • excellent onpage optimization
    • unique, relevant, and informative content
    • build backlinks on high PR sites. Make them look natural, opt of nofollow and dofollow backlink

Another big thing is to go ahead and create social media accounts and start promoting your content/website on social media sites. To get more followers all you have to is build up your audience. A good method is to follow - unfollow people on this social sites, post great content on them, not only from your website, but from all around the web, content must be interesting. You really want natural following on all your social media networks.

At first, when you have at least 20 articles on your website, try to get social signals to each article.

There are more stuff to do to promote your website, but the important things and what you need to do firstly is onpage optimization, and quality content.

People say content is king, but I have to disagree with that, without backlinks and social signals, you will only have a website with few visitors.

Hope this helps. And never give up on your goals, push hard and smart.

I personally prefer to get a new domain. It's hard to investigate an old one . And i can place proper keywords in the domain.
I'd rather focus on building my website than investigating the old domain name.

Sure, you will get the good ranking with a lot of traffic if you have updated your website content. It should be unique. Do blog submissions and articles related your website keywords.

Not so fast, but yes. If the keyword is not so competitive and with some GOOD and optimized (800+ words) articles, it shouldn't be so hard! :)
