9 - 3 ÷ 1/3 + 1 = ? It was in the news . I got it right. It's sad that only 60 % of us gets this right, when in the 1980s 90% got it right. Stupid core math.
I got it wrong. Of course, it has been many decades since I last took a math course and the little math that I use in my career is really basic, so I had long ago forgotten the order of solving equations.
The trick is the division sign. If you remember from 7th grade, you have to flip the fraction on the right. So 2 divided by 1/2 = 2 x 2/1
Actually, I knew that. What I forgot was that you do division first and then addition/subtraction. I came out with 19 by simply solving from left to right.
I still don't get it. How does 3 ÷ 1/3 equal 9? But then again, math has never been my fav / strongest thing. I was a C+ (3+) math student back in the day, so not being able to solve that sh*t didn't make me feel any worse.
Fine, and I don't want to go on with this forever, but if 3/0.33 equals 9.091 (if you round it) shouldn't the answer be: 9 - 3 ÷ 1/3 + 1 = 0.909 ? Seems like the whole world and social media are going berserk for nothing. In what dimension 1 and 0.909 are the same thing?
nop because it's really 3 / 0.33333333333333333333333333333333333 so the final answer is 0.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 which is basically 1
You have 3 apple. Each apple you slice for 3 parts. How many parts of apples you have now? Yes, 9. Follow next: 9-9+1=0+1=1
