Can you say "the #1 place for xxxxx" on your website?

    Hi guys,

Say you have a download site, can you put "#1 downloading place on the internet" on the title?

Or if you have a blog, can you put "the #1 blog on the internet" or something to this effect?

Is there any legal issues? Can it be backed by things like, my close friend said it, or the newspaper said it, etc.

I think it wouldn't be a problem if you note aside what you are comparing the site to.

You can say whatever you want:)
If anyone who says something wrong in the internet would get into trouble there was no internet IMO.

Legal issues? Well, lying about the popularity of your site isn't illegal... if you want to impress people though, lying about it won't help. And putting "#1 at xxx" won't give you much of traffic boost, unless it's really true.

Edit: nightmaster beat me to it. The day that you can get in trouble for stating your opinion (or even lying) is the day that the internet dies.

You could just say, "the place to [fill whatever here]!"

That way you have no issues, but it still sounds good :)

... And even if it was true, it still wouldnt help :)

Put what you like mate, tags like this will really not help much.

I doubt anyone would really email saying "you are lying about being the no.1!!" If your really botherd, you could put "Your No.1 source for xxxx" to me, thats like your not claiming to be "The" best, just "Their" best.

You can say whatever you want...you'll just sound ridiculous if you say your #1 when you're obviously not. For instance, say I put together a search engine and write "The #1 Used Search Engine on the Internet" on the home page. Will I sound like i don't know what I am talking about? Sure. But unless that exact phrase is copyrighted by the #1 SE, you can use it.

I would say you can, but I wouldn't. If a site tells me they are #1 and then tries to sell me something I immediately think poorly of the site. Maybe you could rephrase the phrase heh.

of course you can, just like Donald trump who says he has the best buildings in the world. and its really true.

but , do make sure your blog is really the best to gain respect and have a good reputation.

I don't understand why topics like this become so huge. The first two replies (maybe just the first reply) amply answered the question.

And before anyone asks, when I wrote my reply, the first guy hadn't posted yet ;) or else I wouldn't have even replied.

Probably because different people want to share their believed to be different opinions.
In most cases they are indeed one and the same opinion

Now to express my *very different opinion* - if your site is let's say the first devoted on the research of the facet eye of a long distinct mammal, why not?
If it is not the first, then it's much more better not to claim primacy.
