Can you ruin your SERP by adding content

I have noticed that often when adding links that my SERP position initaially goes backwards.
This is quite disconcerting particularly if we are already no 1 on google.

So my question is if you have a site that is already ranking very highly in SERP is there a risk in adding a substantiall amount of new content ?

I have 1 site that is number 1 and has been for a long time but we plan to add around 20 more information pages in sub domaines

Does anyone have any experinece of SERP movement in this event
Its scary for us beacuse the site does a huge amount of business and if we suddenly went to page 3 it would be like turning off the tap

If you rank N1 and there is no need to add more content - why do you bother?
Adding new content on authority sites won't be such a problem but could kill a relatively new site.
Do a very careful keyword analysis and make sure the content is search engine friendly if that's the case.

    Thanks
We need to add more pages because our site has some shortcomings in that it does not provide all of the information the customers require so we are adding pages with information such as warranty details or instalation details.
I have thought about (and i may do it this way) duplicating the site with a new relevant url optomising it fully and simply having a link to the new site where all the extra information is
This would have an added benefit in that we aim to have more than 1 site in each selling category on page 1 of google as this will give us some protection against a sudden loss of SERP on an individual site

Well, if your site is somehow incomplete you should add the new content. Add it all at once and prepare for the worst (at the beginning).
Keep building quality backlinks and after a few weeks / months you site will be much stronger and your traffic will increase.

You should never duplicate anything or you will face all kinds of problems.
Preferably your site code + content should be absolutely unique for best results.

generally content is good but it can lower your ranking but usually it can be better,i recently added a few sentences more content to a page and it got to the top#10 before i added the content it was ranking like #13
