I have ran across people saying their posts have been deleted...
however, that may or may not be the real reason....

Their terms are somewhat vague...the closest thing I could find was
Spam: Dont link your site to gain higher serps...which seems silly,
of course you want to put your link, why would you be there otherwise?

however, i could not find anything regarding affiliate links.....

    Thanks

You can promote your affiliate links in this way. But doing this, you should always write targted posts. Here is a good example: when you are writing about "How to select the best hosting for your Wordpress blog" you can also add the line and write "I recommend this particular host for a Wordpress blog" and insert your affilate link.

use a redirect script that way your affiliate link is not on their site, plus it give you the added bonus of being able to track which links are working and which links are not.

Nothing in the terms I could see. I think the peoples blog post you know have been deleted are likely to be one article blogs or just a mass of posts saying the same thing(ish) promoting a link. In which case a person could have reported the blog for spam and had a post removed. But that the most I can think of. Better to use the off site re-direct, good content... and probably a not so touchy free blog host provider...
