    I`m very sorry for the stupid question,but what is the meaning of ^ in front of and $ at the end of the string?

    ereg('^([0-9]{1,3}\.){3}[0-9]{1,3}$',$var))

    its a condition in regex so if you have a regex that you are trying to match an url you could use th ^ to check wether it contains a www. and if it does contain a www. carry on matching other parts of the string / url
