Can you 'over do it' with anchor text?

Someones post here on DP just caught my eye. This guy was saying not to over do building links with anchor text or it will result in the opposite effect and you will end up moving down in search results for that keyword.

I didn't realise you could over do it, I thought it was a case of the more the merrier?

Too much done too quickly can flag you up as 'spammy' with google.
A good strategy is to vary your anchor text - use synonyms for your main keyword.

Varying the phrase(s) in your anchor text makes it look more like "natural". Google, along with other search engines, want natural results. It just makes sense when you think about it. :)

Yes it is important to vary your link anchor text. If too high a percentage of your keywords uses a certain phrase/keyword you may get penalized by Google. By varying your link anchor text you benefit from getting rankings for multiple keyword phrases. So it makes sense to do this anyway. Google doesn't like unnatural linking patterns. To avoid any penalties you want your links to look as natural as possible. A good page would naturally get links with a wide variety of keywords.

Its always advisable not to do keyword stuffing. Do not keep repeating the same link texts and use the same outgoing link .. Use variations ..

Overdoing it will completely counteract any positive results.

Yes, you can overdo it. It is a common mistake.

Five years ago, simply get "more" worked. G has gotten much smarter though....

I haven't had any problems with my anchor text: SACRAMENTO WEDDINGS

haven't made any changes, except I will say "Wedding In Sacramento" or (sometimes) Sacramento wedding (non-plural).

My link building is slow and steady, at a pace of 5 new domains per day (maximum).

As long as you build gradually -- you are OK to use the same KW every time.

Anything in excess is not good and looks unnatural. So does the link building and google will flag your site as spammy if too many links are built within a very short span. Do it slowly but steadily and use different keywords for different links.
