Can you move wordpress once it's been going for a while?

    Hi
Sorry - bit of a poor title for this thread and also not sure if this is the right place for this question...

Anyway - I've just set up add on domain for what will be my new site - hosted at the same place as my other website. It's not a sub-domain so it can be accessed directly using it's own domain name.

I was going to install wordpress here but I suddenly had a thought - what if later down the line I wanted my new site to have it's own space completely on a server? What if my host suddely died (not that I think that'll happen as they are darn good and been going for quite a while).

Could all my entries be moved intact to become the main domain registered to my host or transfered to another host?

I'd appreciate your advice on this - one of my skills is being a forward thinker - and also one of my greatest sources of procrastination! Too many 'what if's' sometimes!

    Lily

Wordpress is just a database and some PHP files. Export the database, zip up the files, and put it all on a new server. You can do it in 10 minutes.

hey..i been giving a thought also about this problems..let's say you been running the wp site for almost 2-3 years and lots of traffic and data inside the database and suddenly without warning your server down or died (not likely) it may cause a major problem with you...maybe a wp database backup can solved that.

and always make backup of your theme..i know some theme had some custom or manual input code inside even you're using a free theme..don't want to do it all over again..:)

    Hi Mich alex
Good point that - haven't even got as far as sorting out the design yet but it's something to put on my list of things to do - and things to learn how to do :)

You can move it whenver you want. If you are afraid of losing the data, take regulary back ups.

Is it better to backup with cPanel or by hand?

You just need a backup of the db, right ? cPanel I suppose. Its 2 steps only to download a backup.
