Hi everybody. I'm considering getting really serious about CSS and becoming a CSS designer. But maybe this would be a mistake. It seems like people are doing logos for $100 and entire websites for as little as $500. How can anybody make any money doing this? Does anybody here make any real money? If so, how?
It's a pretty saturated market. But you're welcome to test the waters. Post a thread in the BST forum offering your services, see how you do!
An entire website for $500 is actually pretty good. Churn one out every two weeks will give you $12,000 a year.
Depending on how good your at coding and designing, then that will determine how much money you will earn. Also how soon you can complete these things. If your designs is what appeals to everyone, then expect to start earning a bundle from it. The less you charge, the more orders you will get and possibly more money you will earn.
$12,000 a year in the UK & US is nothing, you couldn't live off it. If you're exceptionally good at CSS/HTML with Javascript you can earn $500/day, contracting in central London. $800/day with exceptional JS skills, XSLT, XML, AJAX.
CSS alone will get you nowhere, you need some other skills to go with it like as AdamSee said - XHTML/CSS, Javascript, AJAX, Design (Photoshop) and possibly PHP or another serverside language.
But how is it possible to be really good at all of these things? For instance, many here might be incredible at CSS, and javascript, but I would know far more than they would about photoshop. And then, after you know all that stuff, does someone want to hand you a measely 30,000 or even 40,000 per year when it takes so long to master all these things?
You can't build a website on CSS alone. As a bare minimum you would need to know XHTML, CSS and some javascript.
