Can you hyphen a single word for a domain name?

According to what I have read about two worded domain names, you can hyphen them and Google recognizes them as two separate words (my-domain.com). Google also will recognize mydomain.com as two separate words too. So my question is if Google can recognize mydomain.com as two words (my domain), will Google recognize one hyphenated word as a complete word. For example centi-meter.com recognized as centimeter. If Google will recognize a hyphenated word as a single word, then how does that effect SEO?

I think it would recognize it as two separate words that don't make sense.

If the two words combined make sense and is reguarly used in every day life, it would surely consider hyphenated words as a single word. Just search for centi-meter and you would have all the listing citing centimeter in the serp! :)
