Can you hit Supplemental for lack of content?

Hey guys.. I have a few pages that are indexed in the supplemental.. I noticed the post's title was just the keyword itself, so I bulked that up (heard that helped avoid supplemental also)

However.. I also noticed that the content of the posts wasn't really here.. I think the articles were only like 200-250 words as they were just a description of some short idea's that were going to be played out in the near future.

Would this be a cause of putting it into supplemental?

    Thanks

    -Derek

possibly, remember if something goes supplemental, it means the big G doesn't see it as any benefit to the user, that could be here

Another reason could be because you have duplicate description meta tags which also results in supplemental results

I don't use MetaTags, I just use the tags for Social networking, or would that be the same thing Dudibob?

that's the same thing I'm sorry to say, you should have at least a meta description and a title tag (you can ignore the keywords tag). Title adds uniqueness to each page and descriptions help stop the page going supplemental and provide a good hook in the SERPs ;)

where did you get that from? i thought meta description is only for promoting organic traffic (making ppl click on your site in SERP). having same meta causes supplemental, but omitting them? anyone care to chip in on this.

yes it does, trust me on this, seen it happen to a lot of shopping cart sites and a few people have confirmed it, I think Matt Cutts did a post about it but I can't find it :s

If you don't have a description meta tag, Google takes some text from the page, if it takes the nav bar for your pages you are FUBAR'd. It's safer to add unique description meta tags than hoping Google doesn't use the same tags ;)

    Yes, it can..

"Same page Title and Description: If there are pages that have the same title and description, then many of those pages have a high chance of going supplemental. It is always advised to keep page titles and description unique." quoted from source...:)

Reasons why sites are in Supplemental Index:

    * Pages with very little text content.
    * Pages with duplicate content.
    * Pages with too many query strings in the URL (Dynamic URLs)
    * Pages with same meta tags, title and description on every page.
    * Pages with very few backlinks.
    * Pages with very long file names with lots of dashes.
    * Orphaned pages which not linked to any other pages in your site
    * Pages with reciprocal links possibly to bad neighbors
