Can wordpress do this?

On slashdot they have a sections that arnt posted on the main page but you can click "gaming" and get the gaming news. Can wordpress have different sections?

 

you can do by Categories.

 

And make sure the template you using, have wp_list_categories() in your sidebar.php

 

Or you can add this function, if not present.

 

but I dont want it to show on the main page. is there a way for it not to show on the main page?

 

yeah, create home.php file and delete the categories function and have an index.php with it. home.php will show homepage only, and then index.php will be all posts
