Can they? YES. If they really wanted to betray their customers and jeopardize their credibility.

Don't worry about that. All for customer and customer first. Therefore, try to find a trustworthy hosting company to host your website. Then you just need to
pay attention to your website and buiness.By the way,you can change the password of your account regularly, and usually we don't have any access to your
password.Pay more attention to the security lest your account is penetrated by hackers.

Of course they can. A host has physical access to the server itself, so no matter what they tell you they can get into whatever they want.

As others have posted, the question is WILL they steal your password? If you are working with sensitive material that MUST be located on a server, buy a server and host it with a reputable coloco/datacenter. That is the only way to be sure no-one has access to your data.

yes and no, depend on their system.
if they record your real password, then the answer is yes.

But, they don't need to steal your password. they can go to your files and look at your script.

My suggestion, if you want to build a serious website then don't use a free domain or server.
It always better to spend some money to make a big money..

Well maybe not stealing their customer's website, but you have to wonder when they repeatedly email you with your username and password in cleartext email messages. Anything is possible. Believe it.

Look I'm going to tell you this from experience... if you use almost any php script that connects to a database there is more than likely a config.php file or some other similar file which has the name and password used to connect to the database.

With that being said, if an admin wanted to... they can snoop through your hosting and look at any file... including the ones responsible for connecting to databases. This is why I like to stay away from free hosting sites and used paid only.

Any good hosting company will never do such a thing.
For starters they are breaking the law if they steal your data/site

I run BlogsHoster.com and we never would even think of doing such a thing.
But the answer is if a host wanted to take your data it is very possible as they dont need your password as a host can get into any account and view any file.

On occasions we do check sites that are in violation with our terms by uploading wares and illegal content so we have to check the account, As every host will do the same, But if we made a mistakes then the account will never be checked again but we have never made a mistake we know if they have uploaded wares etc so the account gets removed from the server..

But saying that if you don't upload wares etc then the host should never even go into your account only if they need to to fix a support issue that you have raised.
And if any host did steal your data/site then they should be reported to there data center and closed down

If your concerned about security, your passwords should be different for each server and they should be encrypted. Most webhosts encrypt your passwords for their systems. However, these can be retrieved by password resets lots of times. You should have a separate password for each website you want to login. You should also encrypt any login passwords you have for your websites. If you do this then you should be fine.
