Can we only Optimize the sub-domain?

Can we optimize the only sub-domain of the website and not the parent domain?
What is the pros & cons of this kind of optimization?
What could be the result if not done parent domain optimizing?

Subdomains are treated as a different address. So, optimizing them do have any effect on the main domain.
