100% you can learn seo yourself. To start with you should read "Google search engine optimization starter guide" to understand the basic of seo. After that create a blog on any topic and try to rank it in google by getting tips and trick from different sources on internet like you can learn a lot from this forum. Search and read old discussion and try to understand and implement it on your blog. You can learn it in few month.....
SEO is not exact science. Everything is experience. Until you try it yourself, you will never learn it.

Now a days i could see couple of firms and companies giving training for SEO but its worthless and useless. No one can make train youy for SEO until and unless you start practicing by yourself as watsonliving said, i totally agree to your point.
Yes.. You can learn yourself without any trainer. Just try to learn basics from some excellent tutorials and webmaster guide from Google. Also watch video by matt cutt on you tube he also solve some very interesting questions. After that start working on small project, apply your knowledge what you have learn on that project. Soon you get everything. Many things in SEO will come by trial and error so for that you need to work on actual seo project. Good Luck

Learning SEO is a long process and should be done in a somewhat planned out and orderly fashion. Just reading random tips on the web is no way to learn SEO. I suggest you get a good book or two on SEO and read. 98% of what you'll read online in forums and blogs is going to either be 1) so basic that you could probably have guessed it or 2) total BS being spouted out by someone who knows a few SEO buzzwords and therefore declared themselves an SEO expert. If you can't tell the difference between those who really know SEO and those that are blowing smoke up your butt then you will have a long hard, penalty filled, full of failure road to being an SEO. Plan on spending a year or so at least before you're even a novice SEO.
