I still haven't used twitter as marketing tool. But I think if you have a good amount of followers on the Topic you are covering you will get good visitors. In Twitter you have to shorten the url. So It will not help you on search engine ranking. But you can get traffic for sure.

 

My private twitter account had an pagerank of 5 while I was active, so you can imagine what a pagerank 5 backlink means for my blog.
